What is New England Photos Plus?

New England Photos Plus is an online store / art gallery dedicated to showcasing the photography and other artistic works of John and Natalie Grabill.

Who is John Grabill?

"i started out as a child, knee-high to a grasshopper...."

Yeah, that's all I could get out of him. A quiet fellow.

John started snapping odd shots with his Brownie Bullet camera a few years ago, moved on to a series of Kodak Instamatics, and through the auspices of his children (Cinnamon, Aurora) and wife (Natalie), now employs an actual 35mm Vivitar, Olympus Stylus and a Fuji Endeavor. All very non-digital. Long time friend, frisbee buddy and excellent photographer Peter recently offered up an actual Nikon 35mm which John is attempting to understand. This has increased resolution for enlargement purposes but keeps the point-and-shoot aspect alive: what is seen is what is got.

He has exhibited a few shots here and there, starting on his mother's refrigerator....but if you don't know her,in the month of August 2005 you could have seen nine of his Reflections in the Wayland Library, his first public showing. In 2001 his Dreamscape image won the best Amateur award in the annual Eastern Mass. National Wildlife Refuge photo contest. Four of his photos were published in two 2005 US Fish & Wildlife Service comprehensive conservation plan reports: two each in the Great Meadows National and Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge editions. In March of 2006 he and Aurora mounted a show in the Raytheon Room Gallery at the Wayland Library with over thirty-five selections, she adding her black and white expertise to the mix. The Tsongas Gallery at Walden Pond in Concord, MA then hosted a three-month show of brand new photos by John during April, May and June 2007. When not on exhibit, the bulk of his collection is on loan at the Neurometrix corporate headquarters in Waltham, MA. Three of his photos were published in the 2006 Annual Report. A unique show of all new photos entitled NEAR and FAR (Contextual Viewing) hung in the Raytheon Room Gallery during December 2007 and January 2008 delighting many with it's interactive design. NEAR and FAR then moved to the Tsongas Gallery and was there from March to June 1st, 2008. During June and July Aurora and John each had two new photos on display as part of the Arts/Wayland members show in the Raytheon Room Gallery, and will again in September and October in the Wayland Town Building: an opening reception will take place from 6:30 - 8P on Monday 9/22. In November and December it's back to the Raytheon Room for a Winter show. An all-new show by John will be exhibited at the Gallery in Emerson Hospital in late 2009.

Another aspect to John's photography is supplying pictures of diners and roadside statuary to Bill Griffith who then turns them into backgrounds for his internationally circulated daily comic strip, Zippy. Over thirty photos have been used over the past few years, and Natalie, Cinnamon and Aurora have also been published in this manner. (Brother Vin and his family as well have contributed at least that many to the cause!) The 2003 annual featured a transformation of John's shot of a giant Arthur Fiedler bust as the title page. We hope you saw the September 5th, 2005 Zippy, when he conversed with Mauna Loa, the giant macadamia nut, as pictured by John and Natalie on their recent honeymoon. On October 16th, 2005 we hope you saw Kona's Keoki Donkey from the same trip, in full color. The fourth color Zip tip appeared on Sunday January 22nd, 2006. In early 2007 a diner from Tewksbury was a Zippy background and on October 2nd the Giant Bulldog outside Old Rochester HS in Mattapoisett made an appearance.

(By the by, on that Hawaiian trip Natalie took the stunning Hilo Arch shot featured on Page 2 of the photo gallery. Some of her shots from Alaska are featured on Page 6, and more of her work is being added as you read this. Two of her photos are featured in the Near and Far show.)

In the meantime, John and Natalie will keep wandering here and there, adding pictures to this website for your perusal and pleasure. Feel free to go to the Photo Pricing page to see if you might like to have some images made into notecards (also on sale at The Thoreau Shop in Concord and at Wayland Photo and Video) or pick photos from the website to make your own calendar....and you are also welcome to purchase a large or small print, framed or unframed. Want John to take an aerial shot for you, provide something different for your CD or book jacket, or take some other specialty shot? Give him a holler, he likes adventure. Postcards, posters, photomugs and other products are available as well.

What's next? John is trying to get several of his books for children published (illustrated by Aurora), published and is trying to market High School: The Musical written with Cinnamon (years before Disney came up with High School Musical!). A CD of original songs is being readied, and soon on this site you will see photos of shell animals, yes, shell animals, which you can have for your very own. Or a small jar of polished wampum, courtesy of the quahogs of Buzzards Bay. The fun is just beginning, and it is hoped that you will check in now and then to see what has been added. Sound bites from the musical or CD? Natalie's kickin' humus recipe? You'll just have to wait and see...

And a last bit of verbiage, pried from JG:

" and 'though i remain a child in spirit, i am now actually quite taller. please go take a stroll, take a look around, breathe deeply and enjoy your life. hug someone often. thanks for visiting here, see you in the funny pages, down the road, around and about...keep it simple! "
